Choosing a ring in platinum versus white gold:
Why buy a platinum wedding ring instead of a ring of white gold? The reasons are manyfold. Platinum rings have a splendid, natural white color, whereas gold, as we all know, is a yellow metal, and only becomes white with the addition of alloys such as palladium or nickel. Even with these alloys, white gold cannot match the depth or beauty of a platinum wedding ring, and so is oft times plated with rhodium to give it more luster. This rhodium platingcan cause many problems when it comes to maintenance and repairs.

The value of a platinum wedding ring:
Why are platinum rings more expensive than those made of white gold? Platinum is a far rarer metal, and therefore platinum rings are more valuable. While platinum is most times 95% pure, 18 karat white gold is only 75% pure, and 14 karat white gold is only 41.7% pure; this makes a big difference in value. Platinum rings need a higher level of skill to work with than white gold rings; not all jewelers can work with platinum. Platinum wedding rings are far more durable than white gold. They will not wear away over time like gold, and any scratches are merely a disbursement of volume, and not a loss of metal.

The popularity of platinum wedding rings:
In ancient times platinum was used by both the Egyptians and pre-Inca civilizations. Even back then a platinum ring was seen as a far greater indicator of power and wealth than gold. More recently, in the 1920’s platinum wedding rings were far more popular than gold. Platinum was the metal of choice for high society. Up until the 1940’s almost all wedding rings were platinum. Then platinum’s commercial availability was put on hold due to it being declared vital to the war effort during world war II. Now, once again, it is gaining in popularity, and more and more are asking for platinum wedding rings or bands instead of gold.

Why platinum wedding rings are better than white gold:
There are several reasons why platinum is better for wedding rings than gold. First of all, platinum’s luster will showcase your diamond far better than white gold. Nothing makes your diamond shine quite like a platinum band. Moreover, platinum wedding rings will not distort in shape like gold. Gold is a very soft metal, and bends easily. Platinum, once put into shape, will retain that shape for a lifetime. Platinum rings are very strong and hard to bend. Most importantly, platinum holds your precious gems securely. Whereas the prongs on a gold ring are likely to bend, causing your gems to come loose, the prongs on a platinum wedding ring will always hold their shape, giving you the peace of mind of knowing that your precious stones will always be where they should be.
